In the case of both “riles” (Plantation Hacienda tokens), as well as the Merchant tokens, because of the circulating nature of most of these pieces which were deemed same as cash on the island during Spanish colonial era, until deemed illegal by the United States colonial government on 1902, and will show signs to have circulated, with porosity, stain, small nicks & scratches, but totally readable, with neater pieces commanding 20%-30% values over catalog pricing, rarer pieces even more. In the case of Tool Tags, because the Commonwealth Government took over the operation of over 25 sugar factories in the late 1960’s – 1970s, it ordered the destruction of all worker tags, many being simply dumped into landfills, or buried deep on the factory premises, often times covered by a concrete parking lot, making them virtually lost forever, impossibly expensive to get hold of today. It is guaranteed original of that era. Provenance of some of these pieces are from descendants of owners, but the majority come from trades and swaps with antiquarians and dealers, as well as coin collectors, while some pieces get sold by relatives of deceased collectors.
