This offer is for the Limited Editions Club printing of Friedrich Durenmatt’s re-telling of Oedipus. Although written as an appendage to Der Mitmacher, Durenmatt’s philosophical fiction, it is a substantial work on its own account. John Calder writes of Durenmatt, that like Brecht, “[Durenmatt] is interested in the didactic use of the stage to portray man and his institutions in political terms, to investigate the lessons of history and to work out the age-old problem: is man helpless in the face of destiny and the deceits that he encounters at every step, or is it possible for him to rise above the traps set for him – by the gods in Greek drama or by the intrigues of the ambitious and the unscrupulous as in Shakespeare – and so successfully evade them?” He goes on to write of Oedipus that “….the final point the author makes is that nothing can be trusted, neither the good intentions of the well-meaning nor the evil intent of the tyrants. Good is as likely to emerge from its opposite as from earlier good and vice-versa.” This is a scrumptious version. Its typeface is beautiful Didot English Monotype Walbaum, with its antique lines. The type was set by Out of Sorts Letterfoundery in Mamaroneck, New York, with further hand composition being performed by Arthur Larson in Hadley, Massachusetts. For the printing of the text we are indebted to the Heritage Printers of Charlotte, North Carolina, who used a mold made paper from Cartiere Enrico Magnani of Pescia, Italy. For “illustrations” we have two photographs of Marie Cosindas, reproduced as photogravures from the original negatives by Jon Goodman. The first gravure was printed by Clary Nelson Taylor at Renaissance Press while the gravure after the final page of text was printed by Sam Pettengill at Wingate Studio, both gravures being printed on Arches paper. The spine of the book is Nigerian Oasis goatskin while the sides are covered with a natural linen. The book was bound at one of two locations: some copies were bound by Kim O’Donnell at Garthegaat Bindery in Hadely, Massachusetts while most of the edition was bound at Craig Jensen’s Booklab bindery in Austin, Texas. John Isakovics made most of the slipcases at his Jovonis Bookbindery in West Springfield, Massachusetts while Sarah Pringle contributed 100 of her hand-made cases from her studio in Easthampton, Massachusetts. This is copy 648 of 650, and is signed both by Marie Cosindas and Friedrich Durenmatt. The offer includes the essential four page Limited Editions Club Monthly Letter. No two ways about it, this is an awesome produced by numerous artisans using the finest materials. It is an ideal purchase for serious LEC collectors, and for anyone who appreciates grotesque black comedy, especially with copies signed by the author.
