DESCRIPTION OF THE MEDAL AZAD HIND (FREE INDIA) Description: material – Kriegsmetall, coating – gilding, original ribbon. Manufacturer: Rudolf Souval, Wien (Austria). Condition: excellent collectible. A textbook example of a military issue! Historical background: the Free India Legion, also known as the Tiger Legion, the Freies Indian Legion, the Azad Hind Legion, Indische Freiwilligen-Legion Regiment 950 or I.R 950 (German: Indisches Infanterie Regiment 950) is the name of a combat unit within the SS legions that existed during World War II and took part in battles in Europe, in particular, in Bordeaux (defense of the so-called Atlantic Wall). More than 70 percent of the division's soldiers were Muslims – natives of tribes from the territories of modern Pakistan, Bangladesh, as well as from Muslim communities in western and northwestern India. On August 26, 1942, the so-called Indian Legion of the Wehrmacht (since the summer of 1944 – the Indian Volunteer Legion of the Waffen-SS) was formed from captured British soldiers in North Africa. The word “Indian” in the name was rather arbitrary, since the vast majority of soldiers were not Indians and did not speak Hindi. Since these people did not speak German either, communication in the unit was in English. The non-Hindu composition is confirmed by the fact that the unit had its own awards, which had names in Urdu (the main literary language of Indian Muslims): the highest award “Azad Hind” (Free India) and the medal “Shaheed-i-Bharat” (Martyr for the Motherland). The unit was poorly disciplined, which is confirmed by the fact that its own soldiers killed non-commissioned officer Mohammed Ibrahim, one of the initiators of the pro-Nazi movement among immigrants from India. In the spring of 1944, 2,500 people of the Indian Legion were sent to the Bordeaux region in the fortresses of the “Atlantic Wall”. The first combat loss was Lieutenant Ali Khan, killed in August 1944 by French partisans during the legion's retreat to Alsace. The remnants of the legion tried to break through to Switzerland in March 1945, but were captured by the French and Americans. The prisoners were handed over to the British for execution as traitors to their own country. The former legionnaires were sent to the prison cells of Delhi, and the most dangerous were immediately shot.
