Legendary Hattie Carnegie:Born Henrietta Kanengeiser on March 15, 1889 in Vienna, Austria, Hattie Carnegie became a legendary American jewelry and fashion designer from the 1920’s through the 1950’s. Her family emigrated to the United States in 1900, and settled in New York City. Henrietta began working at Macy’s Department Store as a secretary when she was sixteen. Her father was a successful tailor and he introduced her to the world of fashion. An elegant, beautiful woman, Henrietta designed her own clothing and the accessories to match. It was after meeting local dressmaker, Rose Ruth Purchaser, that she changed her name to Hattie Carnegie. In 1909 Hattie Carnegie and Rose Ruth Purchaser opened their own fashion business on East 49th Street in New York. Nine years later she founded the eponymous company, Hattie Carnegie, Inc. Carnegie’s elegant couture collection and their secondary line of “Ready-To-Wear” clothing were revolutionary as they introduced ready-to-wear to the high-end market for the first time. She also pioneered the “Head-to-Hem” boutique concept which included fashion jewelry, lingerie, hats, and perfumes as well as clothing, all in one place. Stylishly understated, yet elegant and luxurious, she appealed to American women’s tastes in fashion. Until the late 1920’s, the Hattie Carnegie Made-to-Order Department was headed by Pauline Fairfax Potter. In 1925 Carnegie signed a contract with Isaac Magnin, allowing her to open her stores right in Macy’s. Hattie Carnegie designs came to Hollywood’s attention and appeared later in their cinematic productions. Her clients included, among others, Joan Crawford, the Duchess of Windsor and the Baroness de Rothschild. Carnegie jewelry, produced since 1918, enjoyed the attention of the elite, including Tallulah Bankhead, Joan Fontaine, Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford. Carnegie attracted different designers to work for her such as Norman Norell, Pauline Trigere, James Galanos, Ward Bennett and Jean Louis who learned the craft from her. Her jewelry reflects many disparate styles, flowers, fruits and leaves are repeated motifs and the eastern influence which was very popular at the time, is found in brooches such as her stylized animal collections. They used her favorite materials such as enamels, artificial pearls, rock crystal, crystal rhinestones, glass beads and brightly colored Lucite successfully in very unusual combinations. Hattie Carnegie, Inc. produced jewelry of excellent quality and style which remain as popular today as the year they were created.
